In this article the authors explore issues related to the integrated safety system in mountain tourism. The main threats and risks, the causes of their occurrence are considered and the ways to resolve them are proposed. Various types of natural mountain hazards such as avalanches, rockfalls, mudflows, fogs, and a sharp deterioration in weather conditions are investigated. The problems related to acclimatization in mountainous areas and the influence of altitude on human physiology are considered. The article also notes the importance of the human factor, as the insufficient level of tourists’ physical fitness, non-compliance with the movement rules, disregard for the equipment condition and the fatigue of tourists in the mountains. The reasons related to risk underestimation and non-compliance with safety regulations resulting to tourists’ injuries are considered in detail. Statistics of the increase number of tragedies in the last decade are provided and this highlights the need to implement strict standards and regulations. The development of modern infrastructure and innovative technologies aimed at rescuing victims and preventing emergencies are in special article attention. The authors offer recommendations on preparing for hiking trips, choosing high-quality equipment and raising the tourists’ awareness. The article aims to draw the attention of the public and government agencies to the problems of mountain tourism safety and to stimulate international cooperation in this field.
